Pandemic Aftermath

Today I’m going to be neither politically correct nor incorrect with no apologies to either faction.  Instead, I am going to remain entirely true to myself rather than to speak in opposition to opposition which is conflict and which normally I will own, but this dialogue shall not reflect that.

Once the current Covid-19 crisis is behind us I feel that we are going to emerge to see a massive societal shift to one of less material need, less spending, less travel, less movement of goods and ergo less of a dependence on fossil fuels.  Our economy will shrink substantially to the point of becoming smaller, more independent “villages” rather than the massive out-of-control one-world economy that is exactly what brought us to this point in the first place!  We will see local growing and marketing and more local smaller scale manufacturing that will also be sourcing locally.

Now it becomes more of a natural progression to a greener world in which everyone benefits using  green or renewable technologies which on a national or even global scale are  clearly and proven unsustainable, but on a smaller scale most certainly are.  Unlike the Climate Movement which has chosen to cut the world off from fossil fuels cold turkey, serving only to create a massive imbalance and absolute chaos.  Perhaps this pandemic is a blessing in disguise.   I’ve always known in my own mind that one day we would be exactly where we are today at this very moment in time.

Make Canada great again.  Canada could realistically become one hundred percent self-sufficient and wealthy in its own right, producing and selling everything it needs right here.  Canada would no longer have to subscribe to the economic philosophy of more- faster-better-cheaper in order to compete globally.  It would be able to meet all of its needs sustainably and hence provide all of its citizen’s needs in terms of affordable or even fully subsidized health care and education.  Unemployment could plummet to near zero.

Of course there would still be some world trading, but not nearly to the same degree as now because the large-scale markets would no longer exist as countries returned to self-sufficiency.

Personally, I can only imagine a world without massive shopping malls dominated by fashion outlets vying to satisfy the requirements of the twenty-six (26) distinct fashion seasons that have come to exist.  Yes, that’s a thing.  When the world’s entire economic success for each year is solely dependent on the one- month period leading up to Christmas Time, known to me simply as Shopping Time.

I hope it will be a better world, one where we are more likely to appreciate and take care of each other as we seem to be so aptly proving we can do and are doing.  After all, that’s how it’s supposed to be, isn’t it?  I do have to be just a little bit conspiratorial and say that even though “they” most certainly aren’t letting a good crisis go to waste for more nefarious agendas, nor should we.  Let the grass grow strong and choke out the weeds…

A small blog piece to coincide with a small but highly sustainable economy.
